What is Ebola?

Ebola virus disease is a deadly and a very serious which often is fatal in humans and nonhuman primates. Ebola was also known as Ebola hemorrhagic fevers which is caused by an infection with a virus that belongs to Filoviridae family genus Ebolavirus.

As the Ebola virus starts spreading through the body, it starts damaging a person’s immune system and organs. Eventually, it leads to levels of blood-clotting cells to drop. This further leads to severe and uncontrollable bleeding that usually kills up to 90% of people who are infected.

Currently there is no vaccination that one can take for Ebola prevention. The best way for Ebola prevention is by not traveling to those areas wherein the virus is found.

Ebola symptoms include high fever, headache, sore throat, stomach pain, lack of appetite, weakness, bloody diarrhea, coughing up blood or vomit, bleeding ears, nose or eyes, difficulty in breathing, chest pain, etc.

Causes of Ebola

The most contagious viruses are measles, influenza or common cold. However, Ebola isn’t that contagious like these mentioned viruses. This deadly disease Ebola starts spreading due to contact with an infected person’s skin or bodily fluids of an animal who is infected such as a monkey, fruit bat or a chimp. It then starts moving from one person to another in the same way. Also, people who take care of an infected person or bury them, are at a higher chance of getting infected by Ebola. Some other common Ebola causes are by touching the contaminated needles and surfaces.

Remember that water, food or air are not Ebola causes. Also, a person who is already infected by the Ebola virus but shows no Ebola symptoms, can’t spread the disease either.

Ebola has a tendency to spread quickly via families and friends since they are exposed to infectious secretions while they care for the infected individual. Therefore, Ebola prevention can be well taken care by using appropriate protective equipment’s such as gloves, masks and gowns,

Types of Ebola

Five types of Ebola virus species have been identified. The four types of Ebola virus are called to cause disease in humans: Ebola virus (Zaire ebolavirus); Sudan virus (Sudan ebolavirus); Taï Forest virus (Taï Forest ebolavirus, formerly Côte d’Ivoire ebolavirus); and Bundibugyo virus (Bundibugyo ebolavirus). The fifth species, Reston virus (Reston ebolavirus), has affected non-human primate and therefore haven’t yet caused the disease in humans. Source:

Treatment

What should you do in case your Ebola worsens?

In case you find signs and symptoms of Ebola, you should immediately visit a doctor for further course of diagnosis and treatment. This is a deadly disease that damages your immune system and other organs. It also leads to clotting of blood cells to drop.

What are the available Ebola treatment options?

Currently, there is no vaccine that is licensed and is used for Ebola.

Also, the Ebola treatment currently is very limited to intensive supportive care. This includes:

  • Maintaining proper blood pressure and oxygen status
  • Balancing the electrolytes and fluids of the patient
  • Treating a patient for any infections which are complicated.

Are there any natural or homemade remedies for Ebola?

Many essential oils such as cinnamon oil have antiviral effects. The Ebola prevention by the spread of microorganisms can be avoided by spraying a few drops of thyme, cinnamon, oregano or any other essential oils that may be beneficial. However, do not forget that essential oils are extremely concentrated and therefore it is best to keep them out of reach of children and also dilute them as directed. Essential oils perhaps may have some action upon the Ebola virus. But, that certainly doesn’t mean that it can be beneficial the Ebola treatment or for curing the same.

When to see a doctor?

Inform your doctor about your signs and symptoms and related risk factors (for instance, all recent travel history). It is also important that you show Ebola symptoms and have had possible exposure to EVD for diagnosing with the same. Your doctor can order a blood test as a confirmation step to know if you are infected by the Ebola virus.

In case you get diagnosed with Ebola virus, you will be immediately be put in isolation for Ebola prevention to spread to others.
