What is Infertility in Women?

Infertility is known as trying to get pregnant for a year at least with the help of frequent intercourse with no success. It is estimated that 10 to 18 % of couples have trouble to get pregnant or have a successful delivery. Female infertility causes are usually difficult to diagnose. Many available treatments are possible yet it totally depend on the cause of infertility. Many couples who are infertile will go on to conceive a child even without treatment. Post trying to get pregnant for atleast two years, about 95 % of couples can successfully conceive.

Symptoms of Infertility in Women

The main symptom that leads to infertility in women is the inability to concieve. A menstrual cycle that goes for long which is 35 days or more or even too short which is less than 21 days, as well as irregular or absent periods indicate that a woman is not ovulating. Apart from this, there may not be any different signs or symptoms.

Female infertility tests

Fertility tests may include:

  • Ovulation testing. It is a test that can be done at home and can be purchased over-the-counter (ovulation prediction kit ). These kits will help in detecting the surge in luteinizing hormone occurring before ovulation. A blood test for progesterone which is a hormone produced post ovulation may also help to know whether you are ovulating.
  • Hysterosalpingography. During hysterosalpingography an X-ray contrast will be injected into your uterus. This X-ray is taken to notice abnormalities in the uterine cavity. This test will also help in determining if the fluid will pass out of the uterus and then spill out of your fallopian tubes. In case of any abnormalities found, you'll likely require further evaluation. In a few women, the test may help in improving fertility that is possibly by flushing out as well as opening the fallopian tubes.
  • Ovarian reserve testing. This testing will help in determining the quality as well as quantity of eggs that are available for ovulation. Women who are at a risk of a depleted egg supply that includes women older than 35 years may face this problem.
  • Other hormone testing. Other hormone tests may include checking the levels of ovulatory hormones and thyroid as well as pituitary hormones controlling the reproductive processes.
  • Imaging tests. A pelvic ultrasound will look for the uterine or fallopian tube disease. At times even a sonohysterogram is also known as a saline infusion sonogram which is used for checking the details inside the uterus which can't be seen on a regular ultrasound.
  • Other imaging tests. Your doctor may even recommend a hysteroscopy that will look for uterine or fallopian tube disease.
  • Laparoscopy. This minimally invasive surgery will involve making a small incision under your navel and then inserting a thin viewing device for examining your fallopian tubes, ovaries as well as uterus. A laparoscopy will identify endometriosis as well as scarring, blockages and irregularities of the fallopian tubes. It will also detect any problems with the uterus and ovaries.

Causes of Infertility in Men

Male fertility is a complex process. The causes of men infertility are mentioned below:

  • Varicocele. A varicocele is nothing but a swelling of the veins draining the testicle. It is the most common reversible reason of male infertility. It is said to be related to abnormal testicular temperature regulation. Varicoceles may result in reduced quality of the sperm.
  • Infection. Some infections can also interfere with sperm production as well as sperm health. They may also lead to scarring that blocks the passage of sperm. These usually include inflammation of the epididymis or the testicles and certain sexually transmitted infections that include gonorrhea or HIV. Since some of the infections may result in permanent testicular damage usually most often the sperm can be retrieved.
  • Ejaculation issues. Retrograde ejaculation happens when semen enters the bladder while orgasm instead of emerging out on the tip of the penis. Various health conditions may cause retrograde ejaculation that includes diabetes, medications, spinal injuries and surgery of the bladder, urethra or prostate.
  • Antibodies attacking sperm. Anti-sperm antibodies are immune system cells mistakenly identifying since sperm as harmful invaders attempting to eliminate them.
  • Hormone imbalances. Infertility may result due to disorders of the testicles themselves or an abnormality that affects other hormonal systems that include the hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal glands or thyroid.
  • Drug use. Anabolic steroids that are taken for stimulating muscle strength as well as growth may cause the testicles for shrinking and sperm production to reduce. Use of cocaine, marijuana, etc. may also temporarily decrease the number as well as quality of your sperm as well.
  • Alcohol use. Drinking alcohol may result in lowering the testosterone levels that lead to erectile dysfunction as well as decrease sperm production. Liver disease that are caused due to excessive drinking may even lead to fertility problems.
  • Tobacco smoking. It is said that smoking or consuming tobacco may lead to reduced sperm count than people who don’t do the same.
