What is Overweight?

The meaning of overweight may be explained in two different ways. The first way can be used by saying imprecisely that a person is heavy. The other way of saying someone "overweight" is that it is more precise that a person falls in between a state of being normal weight and obese. However, now the meaning of overweight has been simplified by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that would define overweight with the help of BMI (Body mass index), that is a person’s body weight measured in kilograms (kg) which is divided by their height in meters (m)squared. This tool of measuring the BMI strongly correlates (in adults) with the total content of body fat. A woman having a BMI of 27.3 % or more and a man having a BMI of 27.8 % or more is termed as overweight. A person who is obese will have a BMI of 30 and above, as per the NIH.

Causes of Overweight

People when they have too many calories because of incorrect habits of excessive eating and drinking food items, will have more body fat. These calories may be burnt with the help of walking to school or playing a game such soccer or by getting involved in a physical activity. Any calories that are extra will be stored as fat in the body. Simply put, the more the excess calories, the more the fat would be stored. In today’s modern lifestyle, people will spend more time watching TVs, mobile phones, laptops and other screens. Instead of walking, they would prefer using a vehicle to do get their work done.
