What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a cancer forming in the cells of the breasts. Breast cancer is considered the most common cancer in women post skin cancer. Breast cancer doesn’t only occur in women, but it does in men too. In breast cancer, the lobules which are the milk producing glands or the breast ducts that help the milk get in to the nipples from the glands; are the places where the cancer is formed. Cancer can be formed in the fatty tissue or the fibrous connective tissues within your breast.

Causes of Breast Cancer

Certain Breast cancer risks may be modifies such as consumption of alcohol whereas there are certain other breast cancer factors such as age that cannot be influenced. Therefore, discussing the risks related to cancer is very important whenever a new therapy is introduced. Say for instance, postmenopausal hormone therapy.

Many risk factors associated with breast cancer such as age, personal history, genetics, menstruation, oral contraceptives, chest radiation exposure, etc. But, many other risk factors tend to increase the chances of developing breast cancer. However, how these factors actually lead to the development of the cancer cells is still unknown. Typically, due to mutations in the DNA lead to normal breast cells becoming cancerous, and since some of these are inherited, most of the times the changed in DNA that are related to breast cells are developed during one's life.

Proto-oncogenes are the main factors that help cells grow. In case these cells mutate, they can lead to an increase in the cells growth without any control. Such mutations are known as oncogenes and therefore this uncontrolled cell growth are the main cancer causes.

Types of Breast Cancer

There are two types of breast cancer or two main categories reflecting the nature of breast cancer:

  • Noninvasive (in situ) cancer: This type of breast cancer is the one that hasn’t spread to other parts of the body from the original tissue and is therefore known as stage 0.
  • Invasive (infiltrating) cancer: This is a type of breast cancer spreading to the surrounding tissues and are therefore categorized as stages 1, 2, 3, or 4.

The tissue that gets affected determines the type of cancer:

  • Ductal carcinoma: This is a type of breast cancer forming in the lining of the milk ducts and is therefore the most common type of breast cancer.
  • Lobular carcinoma: This is a type of cancer in the lobules of the breast where the milk production takes place.
  • Sarcoma: This is a type of cancer present in the breast’s connective tissue and is therefore a very rare type of breast cancer.

Say for example, pain in your breast or a lump in your breast can be caused due to a benign cyst.
