What is Zika virus?

Zika virus occurs due to a mosquito-borne flavivirus which was first identified in monkeys in Uganda in 1947. It was then identified in human beings in 1952 in Uganda as well as the United Republic of Tanzania. The Zika virus leads to some serious birth defects in case an expectant mother has been infected by the virus. Birth defects include babies born with damages in brain development and underdeveloped heads. This deadly virus Zika has been linked to a serious condition called as Guillain-Barre syndrome wherein the nerves are attacked by the immune system. It spreads mainly via mosquitoes. However, there are traces that Zika virus also spreads through sexual transmission. Zika Virus symptoms include joint pain, rash, fever as well as redness in the white part of the eye usually named as pink eye or conjunctivitis.

Causes of Zika virus

Zika virus is usually transmitted via the bite of an infected aedes species mosquito that can be found in the entire world. Later when this infected mosquito bites another person, the Zika virus enters that person's bloodstream. Zika virus also spreads in pregnancy from an expectant mother who is infected with the virus thereby spreading it to the fetus. It is also said that zika virus may spread during sexual intercourse via semen or vaginal discharge or even blood transfusion.

Types of Zika virus

Zika virus is a family member of viruses called as Flaviviruses. The dengue virus, yellow fever virus and the West Nile virus also belong to the same family. Zika virus are part of a larger group of viruses named as arboviruses. The main characteristic of such viruses is that they are usually transmitted to human beings through the bite of infected mosquitoes and ticks. Another recent virus is chikungunya virus that belongs to the family of Alphavirus.
